Lung cancer is a complex and serious disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs. It is primarily caused by tobacco smoking, including both active smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. However, other risk factors, such as exposure to asbestos, radon gas, air pollution, and genetic predisposition, can also contribute to its development.

Lung cancer is categorized into two main types: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). NSCLC is the most common type, accounting for about 80-85% of cases, while SCLC represents approximately 10-15% of cases. Each type has distinct characteristics, treatment options, and prognoses.
