TYPES OF VACCINE DEVELOPMENT

  • Live attenuated: Live attenuated vaccines contain weakened forms of disease-causing microorganisms, stimulating immune responses without causing illness.
  • Inactivated vaccines: Inactivated vaccines consist of killed or inactivated forms of viruses or bacteria, rendering them incapable of causing disease. Although they cannot replicate, these vaccines retain enough structural components to stimulate an immune response.
  • Subunit vaccines: Subunit vaccines utilize only specific components or subunits of a pathogen, such as proteins or sugars, to stimulate an immune response. These vaccines lack the entire infectious agent, making them safe.

  • Toxoid vaccines: Toxoid vaccines are created from inactivated toxins produced by bacteria. These toxins are chemically treated to eliminate their harmful effects while retaining their ability to stimulate an immune response. The immune system then produces antibodies to neutralize these toxins, providing protection against diseases caused by toxigenic bacteria.
